Brno University of Technology (BUT, Czech Republic) is the second largest technical university in the Czech Republic. It comprises 8 faculties with more than 23,000 students and 3,000 staff members. The Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) provides education in the Bachelor and Master Study programs in Computer Science and Engineering and the Doctoral study program in Information Technology. Research activities include content recognition from image and video, multimodal interaction, human-computer interfaces, hardware-accelerated video processing, high-performance and cloud computing, knowledge representation and reasoning and semantic web technologies. FIT is involved in the international cooperation with more than 30 research and education centers in Europe, USA, India and China. It has a strong support from leading industrial companies involved in the IT development (NVidia, Intel, Microsoft, IBM, NXP, Honeywell, Siemens, etc.).

Competencies relevant to ICT-20: The team from the Faculty of Information Technology that will be involved in the project has a long research track record in performing high-impact research on areas relevant to digital cinematography and other creative industries dealing with media assets. We participated in 21 FP7 projects, have taken a part in 5 Horizon2020 ones (up to now) and have been involved in various national and industrial projects. This makes us one of the most successful groups in the Central European region with the focus on efficient image and video analysis and hardware-accelerated data processing and machine learning. The most relevant projects include: IMPART - Intelligent Management Platform for Advanced Real-Time media processes (cooperation with DNeg and UPF), TA2 – Together Anywhere, Together Anytime, AMIDA – Augmented Multiparty Interaction with Distance Access, Caretaker – Content Analysis and Retrieval Technologies to Apply Knowledge Extraction to Massive Recording, GLOCAL – Event-based Retrieval of Networked Media, KiWi – Knowledge in Wiki, WeKnowIt – Emerging, Collective Intelligence for personal, organisational and social use, M4 – MultiModal Meeting Manager, DIRAC – Detection and Identification of Rare Audiovisual Cues, and SMECY – Smart Multicore Embedded SYstems.
