VFX SCIENCE talks SAUCE
Technology and media journalist Paul Hellard interviewed Volker Helzle, Head of Research and Development at Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg about SAUCE and lightfield technology. The article outlines SAUCE objectives, as well as discussing learnings and challenges of the project's first experimental production "Unfolding".
A detailed behind-the-scenes presentation of this production will be held at FMX2019, Light Fields for Movie Productions (Friday, May 03, Bertha-Benz-Saal, 15:15 – 16:15).

SAUCE @CSITF 2019
The 7th CSITF, China International Technology Fair, took place this April 18th-20th 2019 at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. The core philosophy of CSITF is “Better Technology, Better Life”, with a theme of “Innovation-driven Development, Intellectual Property Protection, Technology Trade Promotion”. Saarland University presented SAUCE and the first results on lightfield technology.

SAUCE @FMX : save the date!
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thorsten Herfet (Saarland University), Simon Spielmann (FABW), Jonas Trottnow (FABW) will talk Light Fields for Movie Productions : exploring the possibilities and challenges of integrating lightfield capture into movie production is one aspect of the EU funded project SAUCE. The production Unfolding uses new technologies to generate an innovative trailer for a traditional music festival. Learnings and challenges of this joint effort between partners and especially Saarland University and Filmakademie will be discussed during the talk.

FMX 2019 - Tools of Tomorrow: Light Fields
The Tools of Tomorrow track - curated by Volker Helzle, Head of Research and Development, Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg, is dedicated to Light Fields this year.
Exciting new possibilities and associated challenges will be discussed by the software and hardware innovators of this area. This new technology will impact the industry with entirely new camera hardware and a whole new world of possibilities in post-production. LightFields provide the potential to virtually use physically impossible camera lenses, remove green screen usage in VFX and many more - can we unlock this potential now?

A Lightfield production took place at Saarländischer Rundfunk (SR) studio, shot with Saarland University innovative lightfield capture system. TV station SR-Mediathek covered the production (from 6'30") and radio journalist Reto Widmer, SRF Digital Redaktion, interviewed DoP Matthias Bolliger.

On behalf of the Advanced Imaging Society based in Hollywood, CA, Stereopsia organizes – for the 7th consecutive year – the competitions for the “Lumiere Awards” for the territory consisting of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA).

Prof. Thorsten Herfet from Saarland University held a keynote at IEEE International Conference on Computer and Communications on Enabling Multiview- and Light Field-Video for Veridical Visual Experiences
The conference, set in Chengdu, China, hosted about 500 delegates from 15 countries (USA, Canada, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, etc, several experts in related fields, invited to give keynote and invited speeches. The in-depth discussions among the attendees effectively advanced the academic exchange.

Best student paper award at CVCS 2018 in Norway awarded to Itziar Zabaleta (UPF ). The paper, titled “Photorealistic style transfer for cinema shoots” will be published at the IEEE Xplore Digital Library.

12th-17th September 2018
University Pompeu Fabra attended IBC in Amsterdam. In 2018, IBC delivered another busy event with visitor figures of 55,884. The exhibition grew by 667m2 and conference delegates were up by 14% year on year.

12th-16th August 2018
Foundry, Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, University Pompeu Fabra and University of Saarland made an entrance at this year's Siggraph in Vancouver. Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg also presented a talk on VPET and the animated movie "Einstein". VPET also showcased in a live demo

Foundry just published a short article about SAUCE on their website. The piece, now listed on the News and awards page, gives an outline of the project to Foundry followers.

This year Saarland University is presenting Plenoptic Imaging / Lightfields: New Immersive Visual Experiences and part of early stages research for SAUCE.

Professor Smolic presents keynote speech at the 10th International Conference on Quality of Multimedia Experience QoMEX 2018
This talk will address the content gap for AR/VR, and present solutions developed by the V-SENSE team, i.e. 3D reconstruction of dynamic real world scenes and their interactive visualization in AR/VR.

Current projects have a strong focus on Digital Actors, Immersion, High Performance Computing and the potential of Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR-Now) in narrative entertainment productions. And of course, there is a page dedicate to SAUCE on their website.
