Making of Sunflower

Snowflower emerged from an experimental production which aimed at evaluating multiple research contributions from the project partners in the EU-funded project SAUCE. While the main focus was on character animation driven by machine learning and its control with editing tools directly on set, the real-time nature of these techniques demanded a virtual production environment, featuring real-time camera tracking, rendering and displaying, in this case on a large-scale LED wall. In the end, the resulting short film shows an ape-like creature consisting of brushwood which approaches a hut in the woods to take possession of a sunflower. The production was executed by the research department of Animationsinstitut at Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg.
